Designed by Tom Mark Henry, this revitalisation of an old miner’s cottage transformed the interior with a new kitchen, two bathrooms, three bedrooms, and dual living spaces. The exterior was reclad, fitted with a new Colourbond roof, and landscaped using recycled bricks, connecting the home to its coastal heritage while preserving its original character.

Sustainability and natural material reuse were central to the design, reflecting the client’s eco-conscious priorities. Located directly on the ocean, the home was designed to endure harsh coastal conditions, including salt, extreme weather, and noise. Close collaboration between client, architect, and builder ensured durability and sustainability were key throughout. Double-glazed, UV-protected windows were installed for insulation and noise control, while brass and bronze finishes in wet areas were chosen for their resilience and ability to patina over time.

The design embraces the coastal vernacular through a palette of crisp whites, soft greens, and muted greys inspired by the landscape. The result is a serene, modern retreat that balances functionality with a deep respect for the cottage’s historic charm—creating a sustainable family home that truly reflects its coastal setting.
